PENALTY SWITCH
A further curiosity of this already strange case of Manuel Blanco Romasanta was the prisoner’s pardon and the commutation of the sentence to life imprisonment, despite all the atrocities he had committed: murdering men, women and even children. How is it possible? Mr. Philips had learned of the case from a newspaper article he read in an Algerian newspaper, Akhbar d’Argel , with the headline “ L’Antropophage Galicien “. Due to his knowledge of the human mind and his studies in Electro-biology , he sent a letter to the Minister of Grace and Justice stating that Manuel Blanco Romasanta was affected by a monomania known as lycanthropy , and that due to a disorder of the functions of his brain he was not responsible for his actions. This hypnotist affirmed that through hypnosis he himself had treated that disease with one of his patients, so he asks that the sentence not be carried out and that he be allowed to study the case. Although this hypnotologist never came to travel to Spain or examine the werewolf, the truth is that his appreciations influenced his final destination. Queen Elizabeth II herself, informed by Dr. Philip’s letter to the Minister of Justice, intervened in the Allariz werewolf case. As we have read in our sources, the queen issued the Royal Order of May 13, 1854 , although reading the document of the case does not seem to be from July 24, 1853 , and this would be the statement: “H.M. the Queen has seen fit to pardon Manuel Blanco Romasanta, known to the werewolf, of the death penalty to which he has been sentenced in a case for various murders and robberies, commuted to life imprisonment.” As can be read on page 93 of the case review , it was finally decided to commute the death penalty to life imprisonment. Not simply by the actions of Queen Elizabeth II and the hypnotologist Dr. Philips, but the judges support their decision change with articles of Penal Code 52, paragraph 1 of 70, 77, 115 and 413 of the time.
